Weighted blankets are good for anxiety because they help people feel more calm and relieve stress. People who are anxious typically struggle with “what ifs” and worry. They feel a looming sense of danger, emotional agitation, and a tenseness in their bodies. Weighted blankets help calm the body and the nervous system by increasing the production of serotonin.
What is Serotonin?
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that tells us “all is right” in the world. It helps improves mood. People who struggle with depression are often low in serotonin.
How Does a Weighted Blanket Help Produce More Serotonin?
The weight of the blanket works like deep tissue massage, which utilizes deep touch pressure. Deep touch pressure helps the body produce serotonin. Many people like the effect of a weighted blanket because it is a natural way to increase serotonin.
Why Does it Help People Sleep?
Weighted blankets help people sleep because serotonin is linked to the production of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that sends a message to the body that it is time to rest and go to sleep, therefore regulating the sleep cycle. Using a weighted blanket is a natural way to increase sleep.
Weighted Blankets Add Comfort to Life
Not only do weighted blankets aid in serotonin and melatonin production, they also create a comforting sleep environment. Many of our customers say it reminds them of sleeping under handmade quilts at their grandmother’s house. Some describe it as being swaddled like a baby, or receiving the best kind of hug! Knowing how to comfort yourself is an important part of self-care.
Weighted Blankets For Adults
When I first started making weighted blankets at my kitchen table, I found that the people most familiar with them worked with children in the autism community. Weighting Comforts specializes in blankets for adults, knowing that weighted blankets are very comforting for all kinds of people.
As a therapist, I've seen that most people do not recognize the need for self-care in their lives. In reality, every person needs a toolbox full of self-care practices. A weighted blanket can be one of those tools used when you come home from a day at work, when you are having relationship problems or when you are struggling with depression. Even bringing to mind the idea of crawling under your weighted blanket can help calm your body and bring relief to your spirit.
Weighted Blankets for Kids
At Weighting Comforts, we know that Occupational Therapists (OTs) are the best people to prescribe a weighted blanket for a child. We encourage people who need children's blankets to talk to their OT. OT’s want to make sure that weighted blankets are the right weight and size so that the blanket does not interfere with a child's movement or breathing.
How to Choose a Weighted Blanket
Lots of people ask, “Which blanket is right for me”? Honestly, it is personal preference, but you will need to consider weight and temperature.
Weight
We suggest choosing a blanket about 10% of your average body weight. But some people like a very heavy blanket, and others prefer light pressure. The majority of our blanket sales are 15-pound blankets. As you consider which blanket weight to order, you may want to pick up a 10-pound weight and then a 15-pound weight. Some older people have trouble maneuvering even a 10-pound blanket, so a lap pad may be a better option for them.
Temperature
At Weighting Comforts, we provide three different temperature options in blanket choices: Cool Max, Quilting Fabric or Flannel.
People regularly ask if the blankets are hot. We have worked to find fabric that was engineered to prevent getting too hot at night. We are so proud to be the only weighted blanket company to offer a CoolMax® blanket. Menopausal women are especially grateful to find a weighted product that will help them get to sleep deeper and stay asleep longer, even through night sweats! We offer CoolMax® in white and light grey.
Our Quilting Fabric blankets are the happy medium of the fabrics we offer for temperature comfort. The quilting fabric blankets are a medium weight 100% cotton. They do not add warmth, nor will they will keep you cool. We have several color choices in quilting fabric blankets: pewter, blue chambray, and aqua spray.
Our warmest blanket is the charcoal flannel. It is soft and cozy, perfect for the person who always feels cold.
